British Asparagus Facts
British Asparagus has a short season of only 8 weeks, running from 23rd April (St George’s Day) until the summer solstice on 21st June – all the more reason to get it while you can!
Eating British Asparagus supports gut health. Rich in fibre, asparagus also contains an array of minerals, antioxidants and probiotics which can help to support the growth of healthy gut bacteria.
Growing British Asparagus is a labour of love. It takes three years until one crop is ready for harvest. The crown of the asparagus is planted underground, at first growing into a fern-like plant, drawing energy from the sun through it’s leaves and converting into sugar. It’s not until the third year that we start to see those lovely spears start to pop up through the soil, so you know that every stem you eat has been grown with patience and dedication.
British Asparagus is widely regarded as the best in the world. The UK’s climate allows for the asparagus stems to develop slowly over time, producing a full, sweet flavour and fine, tender texture that’s unique to this crop.
When you buy British Asparagus between the end of April and June 21st, you are keeping a home-grown industry thriving. Choosing British over imported supports over 100 asparagus growers across the UK; from those growing for your local supermarket to smaller farms with just one acre!
Asparagus growers traditionally stop cutting on the 21st June – Midsummer’s Day, right at the point when we expect the sun to stick around for a few more weeks. Any spears leftover will be left to grow into ferns, and a sunny July and August will help produce a healthy crop for next year.
Not only is British Asparagus a delicacy, but it’s a superfood too! With immune-boosting vitamin C, it’s also high in vitamin K which is essential for healthy blood clotting and supports bone health.
Asparagus is often called the ‘Usain Bolt of the vegetable world’ due to its speedy growing time – growing up to 10cm per day at the peak of the season!
The high level of antioxidants present in British Asparagus can help combat free radicals and oxidative stress which contribute to aging, inflammation, and diseases including cancer.
